I am a student of Plus Two (Delhi Board/ISC) and I want to become a Physicist. I would like to go through the Engineering curriculum rather than the Bachelor of Science mode. Please suggest a good course in engineering that would help me for a career in research in Pure Physics or Atomic Physics.
Venkatesh Shetty
A physicist is a scientist who studies or practices physics. Physicists study a wide range of physical phenomena spanning all length scales: from the sub-atomic particles from which all ordinary matter is made (particle physics) to the behaviour of the material universe as a whole (cosmology).
There are numerous branches of physics and each has its corresponding specialists.
The undergraduate curriculum generally includes the following range of courses viz., Theoretical Physics, Astronomy, Electricity, Optics, Quantum Physics, Nuclear Physics and Solid State Physics, to mention a few.
At a later stage you can specialise in Astrophysics, Atomic Physics, Molecular Physics, Bio Physics, Chemical Physics, Geo Physics, Material Science, Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics and Plasma Physics, to identify a few areas.
At the engineering level (viz., Bachelor of Technology or Engineering) Universities do not have programmes that focus on Physics but have a compulsory paper that will take you through the basics. Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science (IISc.),Bangalore-560 012 (www.physics.iisc.ernet.in) is a wonderful place to be in for the area of Physics.
You can pursue the Integrated programme leading to Ph.D. after graduation.
The areas of research are exponential.
You can contact the Chairman of the Department at Ph: 2293 2315. E-mail: chairman@
physics.iisc.ernet.in
Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) (www.jncasr.ac.in) is another place that is worth considering. You should contact The Coordinator, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Jakkur P.O., Bangalore-560064. E-mail: academic@jncasr.ac.in
Many say that the study of pure sciences has come to halt because of the applied sciences viz., Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, and other areas of specialisation. Students like you can help rekindle the interest in pure sciences whose contribution is enormous.
I am pursuing a Diploma in Animation and a programme in C language from a private training institute. I have completed Diploma in Computer Engineering after PUC and have plans to learn Wireless Communication and Software Testing. Please advice if I have a good future.
Syed Pasha
The field of Wireless Communication and Software Testing provide you with ample opportunities for a good career. Your Diploma in Computer Engineering will hold you in good stead.
Wireless Communication is the transmission of information signals without a physical connection, through technologies such as cordless telephones, cellular telephones or microwaves. Software testing is a process used to identify the correctness, completeness and quality of developed computer software.
Actually, testing can never establish the correctness of computer software, as this can only be done by formal verification (and only when there is no mistake in the formal verification process). It can only find defects, not prove that there are none.
The world of wireless technology is rapidly expanding worldwide. The current and emerging wireless telecommunication technologies are in the following areas:
2G/2.5G Digital Mobile Technologies
GSM Series
3G Series
OSS Series
ATM Series
Telecoms and wire line voice telephony
Datacoms and computer networking
Wireless and mobile voice and data
While pursuing the courses in Software Testing, make sure you get the following inputs:
Learn the basics of testing including goals and limits, risk analysis, prioritising, and completion criteria
Explore testing in the development lifecycle from unit, integration, system, acceptance, to regression testing
Discover the strategies and planning, roles and responsibilities, defect tracking, and test deliverables in test management
Review both static and dynamic test techniques in the programmes on offer.
Explore the available testing tools and go through the selection process and implementation guidelines

Economics is area of study that has a wide range of applications. It all depends on how you can apply the subject for your growth.
You have a choice of Macro and Micro Economics, Tourism, Economics of Agriculture, Rural Economics, International Economics, Economics for the corporate world and many other areas.
It all depends upon what you have selected as an objective for your career.
You have to ramp up the dynamics of learning and decide as to what course of action you would like to take.
The following would be the options:
Research: To pursue Ph.D. from any of the Universities or Faculty Programme in Management (FPM) from any of the IIMs.
You should focus on research areas that are proactive and have the ability to reach out to the society.
If you take to research and bring some change in the lives of the people it will be appreciated.
Work: (i) You can join a degree college as a lecturer; however, for this you will have to pass the NET examination of UGC.
(ii) You can even join Pre-University colleges with your Post-Graduate qualification.
(iii) Many of the Business Schools engage Economics faculty members for the various courses in BBM and MBA.
(iv) You can work for Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) which focus on the aspects of Economics and sustainability.
(v) The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recruits officers to the Indian Economic Service (IES), an important cadre of the Central Services. You can make efforts to join the IES cadre.
Consultancy: This is another area of functioning, but for this it is required that you have at least five to ten years of experience.
