I have completed graduation and I would like to go for the Civil Services. Can I attend coaching classes and pursue studies as well?
Krishna Murthy
It is good that you are starting early. Select a graduation programme that would help you understand the nuances of the subject from the perspective of the Civil Services Examination. Subjects such as Sociology/Anthropology, Public Administration, Geography, Psychology, and History are of interest and would help you.
The preparation should be intensive. Tutorials help to boost your confidence. The list is by no means exhaustive.

What courses does NIIT Imperia offer? I heard that it is offering a programme from IIM-Kolkata in the correspondence mode. I have six years of work experience in the manufacturing segment and FMCG. Please advice if it is feasible to undertake the programme.

I am studying in the University of Agricultural Sciences. On completion of the course I would like to join a correspondence course in agri-business management and related areas. Please provide information on this aspect so that I can further my career.
Mansi
Being an agricultural scientist, you should pursue agri-business and related areas of study in the regular mode, for it will help you in your placement as well. The area of study has not yet developed through the distance mode. The following two programmes are conducted on campus.
Pursuing them from IIMA and IRMA would help you juxtapose the hard-core agricultural scientist in you and the dynamics of business and the corporate world to help you to augment a career of your choice.
Post-Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management (PGP-ABM) is offered by the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) (www.iimahd.ernet.in).
Institute of Rural Management (IRMA), Anand, offers Post-Graduate programmes in Rural Management (PGDRM), and Development.
Placements are good in both these institutes.
I have heard a lot about Futures Studies; I would like to have more details about it.
Naren Tamanna
Futures studies reflects on how today's changes become tomorrow's reality. It includes attempts to analyse the sources, patterns and causes of change and stability in order to develop foresight and to map alternative futures. In fact, by understanding the present an effort is made to impact the future.
The subjects and methods of futures studies include possible, probable, and desirable variations or alternative transformations of the present, both social and “natural” (that is, independent of human impact).
A broad field of inquiry, futures studies explores and represents what the present could become from multiple interdisciplinary perspectives.
Futures studies takes as one of its important attributes the ongoing effort to analyse images for the future and the way we can better ourselves.
To illustrate: we see a dwindling of the tribal population in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands; the idea of the area of study would be to preserve the tribal ecology and help in furthering the cause of their living. This effort includes collecting quantitative and qualitative data about the possibility, probability, and desirability of change.
The plurality of the term “futures” in futures studies denotes the rich variety of images of the future (alternative futures), including the subset of preferable futures (normative futures), that can be studied.
Pondicherry University has a Department of Futures Studies and you can contact the department for more information.
