I am pursuing a program for mid-career professionals from an IIM. This is a one-year program, which can be construed as a specialization. I am presently in a manufacturing firm and my HR to whom I had reported the same informed me that if statutory bodies do not approve the program, the company will not recognize the same. Please advice as to how I should tackle the situation.

Prateek Inamdar

Many professionals who are in their mid-careers are pursuing programs from leading management and technology institutions. Some are also pursuing online programs from overseas institutions. IIMs are autonomous bodies of the Government, and unlike the other business schools (autonomous or affiliated to a University) and do not come under the ambit of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Make this very clear to the HR department in your organization. The program that you are pursuing is primarily meant for experienced professionals who have adequate work experience. Pursuing a program of this nature from IIMs or leading business schools has its own uniqueness and one should leverage the learning to catapult oneself to better corporate positions.

Does AIIMS conduct any short-term training program for people who specialize in the laboratory-working environment?

Shashi

Via e-mail, Bangalore

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) (www.aiims.edu) conducts the Laboratory Technicians Training program to impart basic maintenance and operation of electron microscopes and other ancillary equipment. The eligibility criterion is i) B.Sc. degree, ii) Diploma in MLT with a minimum of two years experience in light microscopy.

The next training program is scheduled for February 7, 2011, and will last for a period of 10 days. If interested, you should contact the Officer-in-charge, Electron Microscope Facility, Department of Anatomy, AIIMS, Ansari Nagar, New Delhi-110029 (Fax: 011-26588663/26588995).

I am 15 years old. I am interested in photography. My mother recently gifted a camera to me. I am interested in pursuing a formal program in photography. Is there any institute in Bangalore where I could apply?

I will be completing B.Com. in Computer Science in 2011. I want to pursue PG and I am confused between M.Sc. (IT) and MCA. Kindly help me to make the right choice.

Bavitha

Via e-mail, Bangalore

For higher studies, the options are as follows:

M.Sc. (Information Technology), two-year, annual or four-semester program.

Master of Computer Applications (MCA), three-year, four-semester program, with focus on Computer Applications.

MBA (Information Technology), two-year, four-semester program with focus on Management/Administration and IT.

Post-Graduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA), one-year, annual or two semester program.

Placements in institutions come by for the second and third programs. The first three courses with add-on certification programs/courses in the area of a specific ERP will surely help you to acquire a job in the corporate world. Considering that you have pursued B.Com., there are good opportunities in the sector of finance management/administration. By taking to Chartered Accountancy or Company Secretaryship, and learning Oracle Financials and similar programs, you will be able to reap the benefits and ensure success in your career.

I am a final year B.Sc. microbiology student and would like to become a microbiologist. Kindly give me the details about higher study options and the related career prospects.

Rash N. K.

To become a microbiologist or a scientist, one should obtain a postgraduate degree with good marks and go on to pursue research. Microbiology is a frontier area of study, and research assumes great importance when we consider the discipline's contribution to pharmaceutical and medical fields.

Microbiologists are associated with the discovery of a range of products from antibiotics to insulin. Job openings are available in research and development departments in medical, pharmaceutical and agricultural fields.

The discipline can be divided into different categories such as applied microbiology, medical microbiology, industrial microbiology, marine microbiology, agriculture microbiology and so on.

Applied microbiology covers vast areas of study including immunology, epidemiology, microbial metabolism, virology, pathogenic bacteriology, mycology, metabolism, industrial, agricultural and medical biology.

Students with a Bachelor's degree in life sciences can opt for applied microbiology as a subject for their higher study.
