Q&A
There's nothing like the military

My son is interested in joining the military services. Please give me details about the eligibility, time of notification and other related information about the Combined Defence Services Examination. He will be graduating in 2011 in Commerce with specialisation in Computer Science.

Praveen Shenoy

The UPSC conducts the Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) twice every year for the recruitment of officers in the Army, Air Force and Navy. Candidates qualifying in the written test are interviewed by the Service Selection Board (SSB) in different parts of the country and if selected at the SSB, depending upon the preference and position in the merit list, are sent to one of the following institutes for orientation training:

Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehra Dun

Naval Academy, Goa

Air Force Academy, Begumpet, Hyderabad

Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai

Those joining the first three institutes get permanent commissions. Cadets passing out of OTA get a short service commission. Applicants are required to mention their preference while filling up the application form based on qualifications.

Applicants for IMA, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy must be unmarried males in the age group of 18-23, 20-23 and 21-23, as on July 1 of the year of examination, respectively. Married applicants in the age group of 18-24 are also eligible for OTA. A bachelor's degree in any discipline is the minimum qualification for appearing in CDSE. However, applicants for the Naval Academy must have physics and mathematics at the graduation level or a bachelor's degree in engineering. In addition there are some prescribed physical standards for taking the CDS examination, details of which are available in the advertisement published in Employment News.

The examination includes a written test, and those who qualify in the written test are called for interview by the Services Selection Board. The written test comprises three papers: English, general knowledge and elementary mathematics. However, those seeking admission in OTA are exempted from taking the paper on elementary mathematics. Various concessions, like reservation in posts, are available for NCC cadets appearing in the exam.

The exam is notified by UPSC in leading newspapers and Employment News in the month of May/June and November/ December and the examination is held twice, in May and October. A candidate seeking admission to the examination must apply to the Secretary, UPSC, New Delhi, on the prescribed application form. The application forms are available from designated post offices throughout the country. The examination is held in over 40 centres.

I have failed in the B.A. Degree programme and I have not been able to complete the three-year course because of one paper. Can I move over to a distance learning programme or can I do the ‘one sitting' course?

Raghunandan

Moving into a distance education programme at this juncture is not advisable as you will have to go through the grind of three years of degree education once again. Exemptions may be given by one University or two. But then you will have to face the examinations and, of course, the results. On the ‘one-sitting' front, the higher education authorities in India do not approve of the course that was being conducted by a few Universities.

The best way forward for you will be to focus on the subject that has been hampering your movement forward and complete it, and then move on to the higher echelons of academics and the professional world.

I am interested in Women's Studies at the postgraduate level. I would like to take up the programme by regular mode in Bangalore. Are there any courses that conducted in Bangalore colleges? I completed graduation in 2004 in the science field.

Dipti

The NMKRV College for Women conducts the two-year, four-semester Post-Graduate Programme nomenclatured as Master of Arts in Women Studies. Each semester will have a total of five papers focused on the pertinent areas. NMKRV College has been one of the pioneers in Women Studies and a lot of research has gone into the programme. The course is open to graduates of any discipline with 55 per cent marks. For more details, contact Department of Women Studies, NMKRV College (Autonomous), Jayanagar 3 {+r} {+d} Block, Bangalore-560 011. Ph: 22449635.

I am interested in pursuing the Travel course in a good institute in Bangalore. Please give me the details.

Tasnim Ahmed

The Kuoni Academy of Travel (KAT) offers the Post-Graduate Diploma in Travel & Tourism Management, a one-year programme for graduates. It includes Introduction to Tourism, Tourism Marketing, Tourism Organisation, Customer Care and HRM, Travel Agency Management and Administration, Tourism Planning, Business Travel, International Ticketing, Computer Reservation System (CRS) (Galileo), and Communication and Foreign Language (French). The course has been recognised as utility oriented by the travel trade.

The candidate has to appear for a KAT standardised test which is ‘objective-cum-subjective' in nature. Candidates enrolling for the KUONI postgraduate management course are required to appear for Group Discussion on a pre-determined date and time wherein a group of candidates would be asked to give their views and opinions on a current topic and participate in a discussion. Interview is a compulsory component of the selection procedure.

For more details, you should contact Principal, KAT, 9 and 10, Kuoni House, 2 {+n} {+d} Floor, Queens Road, Shivaji Nagar, Bangalore-560 051.

I am in the eighth semester of Computer Engineering and have a very good aggregate. I have also done a project in a complicated area in a large IT company. I want to know if there are opportunities in fields other than software. If so, how can I pursue them? I have got good communication skills.

Pratik Kanwar

I am sure you would have decided to take up the programme after a lot of debate and thinking about the benefits. However, if you want to choose another field, think of:

1. Pre-Sales

2. Human Resources

3. Consultancy

The Information Technology (IT) space is driven by the Pre-Sales teams as has been seen all over the world. With good communication skills and the inputs on the IT business you would be successful in a career in the field of Pre-Sales. Understanding strategic sales and the way clients behave will help you to perform your tasks well.

The function of Human Resources (HR) may be a support entity in an IT or ITES organisation. However, it is an important aspect in any business. You can look at Technical Recruitment and Technical Training which will help you to function well. Many individuals who have focused on IT and HR have made a mark. Being a consultant in the areas of Oracle, System Application Protocol and SIEBEL will help you to augment your talent.
