I have completed B.A. and M.A. through Open University. I am neither getting jobs nor able to pursue B.Ed. What do I do? I am confused.

The normal schemata of academic life in India is 10 years of schooling, two years of Pre-University/Intermediate and three years of graduation. That completes the cycle of 10 + 2 + 3. From your query, we gather that you have directly taken admission to the B.A. and M.A. programmes on the basis of age and under the Open University environment.

In such a scenario you will surely not be permitted to take up programmes on a regular basis without the schemata as mentioned above being adhered to. You could seek admission for B.Ed in an Open University provided you are working as a teacher in a school (as per the guidance of the National Council for Teacher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development). However, the University offering B.Ed in the Open University or Distance Learning environment reserves the right of admission.

You should contact the IGNOU authorities and seek admission for the B.Ed programme and get information on teaching-related programmes such as Post- Graduate Diploma in Higher Education (PGDHE).

My son has completed PUC in the Commerce stream and has got admission for the B.Com programme in a college. I want to send him for the Typing and Shorthand course which I believe will improve his speed and accuracy. Can you provide some details?

It is good that you are planning for your son's academic future. Typing and shorthand course from any institute will help your son. Encourage him to learn Tally and similar accounting programmes which will be of benefit. Starting early will help your son to get to various finance and accounting programmes viz., Chartered Accountancy, Company Secretary, Law, to mention a few. However, you should take his opinion about what he would like to do in the future and based on the discussion and understanding move forward.

My daughter is in I PUC and intends to pursue Business Administration in the future. I read about the one-year Post-Graduate Diploma in Management and related programmes that are conducted by Bangalore University. I made efforts to search on the Internet but failed to get any information. Are these programmes on a par with the MBA of any university? Can anyone pursue these programmes?

Bangalore University and designated affiliated colleges offer the one-year Post-Graduate Diploma programmes in areas which have the content of a Business Administration programme but cannot be considered as Master of Business Administration (MBA). A MBA of any University in India is of two-year duration. Those undertaking the MBA by distance education spend a total of three years as per the norms of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The AICTE-recognised autonomous Diplomas are nomenclatured as Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration/Business Management (PGDBA/PGDBM) which are two-year programmes (Note: the IIMs and some of the leading institutes such as XLRI/XIM provide the two-year programmes, which are nomenclatured as PGDBA). Some of them are considered to be on par with the MBA of any University as per the norms of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Hence, if a student decides to undertake MBA on regular basis, it is advisable to pursue a programme of two-year duration and get the benefits. The one-year programmes are primarily modelled for working executives who want to specialise in a specific area of Business Administration.

Considering that your daughter is in presently in I PUC, she needs to pursue B.Com or BBM (three-year course) and on completion of the programme take up MBA.

Please provide inputs about Law education after Intermediate in Bangalore. Which would be the best place/places to study?

For the general reader the study of law will take place at two levels: After completion of PUC/Intermediate, one can join the five-year integrated law course wherein one can pursue the B.A./BBM and Law programmes. One can complete graduation and then do the Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) which will be a three-year programme.

Most students today prefer to pursue the five-year law programme as it helps in placements and also provides an opportunity for quality learning. The University Law College (ULC) (established in 1948) (www.bub.ernet.in/sub/faculty/Law/Sub/about.html), and National Law School of India University (NLSIU) (www.nls.ac.in) have established themselves as niche players in the faculty of Law in India today.
