In an effort to promote talented youth,a two day rock fest was held recently in Srinagar at the Sher-i-Kashmir indoor stadium.

Various bands rocked the audience with their scintillating performances in the event titled the ‘Battle of the Bands-2011’.

The participants said that the objective of the festival was to focus the attention of the people on music.

“Through music, we represent many things; we can change communities,so music has that power,” said a performer, Zeeshan Khan.

Residents of the city praised the performances of young musicians at the event that was held for the second time in the region.

“We saw such performances a year before when a maximum of 5-6 bands had performed. However this year,21 bands performed. So in Kashmir, music is spreading its wings,” said Parvez Malik.

A judge at the event, Eijaz Ahmed, said the festival aimed at providing a platform to the youth to showcase their talent.

“We have dynamic talent over here and in order to promote talent, we need to organise such events. We must organise these things often to encourage youngsters. You might have noticed the performance of a class eight student, who played the guitar as good as any other musician.

If we don’t give him a platform, then he won’t be able to hone his skills,”said Ahmed. Many bands were made up of teenage schoolgoing boys who were performing live for the fi rst time in their lives.

At the ‘Battle of the Bands-2011’ most performers played rock and sufi -rock genres.

The CRPF and Valley Youth Expression organised the rock fest.
