Efforts to empower youth that join the workforce every year through improved skills, knowledge and qualificationsto enable them to get employment are paying off.

Recently at a function held in Srinagar, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Minister of Rural Development Jairam Ramesh gave away appointment letters from private companies to over a thousand youth from the state for jobs in different parts of the country.

This was done under the centrally sponsored Himayat Project that aims to provide employment, after imparting free skill development training, to over 100,000 youth.

Omar Abdullah said his government would continue to work towards generating employment for the youth.

“Even today our efforts are focused towards generating as many government jobs as we can.

However, without encouraging and exploring opportunities in the private sector, unemployment will remain a big issue. So, we cannot minimize the signifi cance of this day,”said Abdullah.

“The initiative that we are taking today has provided jobs to over 1000 youth in different cities like Srinagar,Jammu,Delhi, chandigarh, and Shimla where they will work in different fi elds,” said Ramesh.

The Himayat Project has brought a ray of hope to youth in the valley.“Because of this, I can now nurture my passion and follow my dreams. I am very thankful for the opportunity that I have got,” said one of the chosen candidates.

Most of the youth who are being trained under this programme are school dropouts.
The basic idea for launching the Himayat Project was to ensure the development of skill and self confidence of the youth.

The second batch of trainees under the programme is expected to pass out by June 30,2012.
